What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a core service within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud ecosystem that provides scalable, resizable compute capacity in the cloud. Essentially, EC2 allows users to rent virtual machines—called instances—on-demand, with full control over their configurations, operating systems, storage, and networking. Launched in 2006, EC2 revolutionized computing by enabling businesses and developers to deploy applications without the capital expense of physical hardware, and with the flexibility to scale resources dynamically.

EC2 provides a wide variety of instance types optimized for different workload profiles—compute-optimized, memory-optimized, GPU-enabled, storage-optimized, and general-purpose instances. This granularity helps tailor computing power to specific application needs, optimizing cost and performance. Moreover, EC2 integrates tightly with other AWS services like S3 (storage), RDS (databases), VPC (networking), CloudWatch (monitoring), and IAM (security), making it a foundational building block for cloud-native architectures.

Key features of EC2 include:

Elasticity: Instantly scale capacity up or down based on demand.

Pay-as-you-go: Only pay for compute time used.

Customization: Choose OS, software, instance type, and configurations.

Security: Network isolation, firewalls (security groups), and key-based access.

Global Reach: Deploy instances in multiple geographic regions and Availability Zones for redundancy and low latency.

Major Use Cases of Amazon EC2

Amazon EC2 is highly versatile and powers a multitude of use cases across industries. Here are the major scenarios where EC2 is extensively used:

1. Web and Application Hosting

EC2 hosts web servers and application servers for websites and mobile backend services. Its elasticity allows handling variable traffic loads such as flash sales, events, or viral campaigns without downtime.

2. Big Data Analytics and Processing

EC2 instances provide the compute power needed for big data frameworks (Hadoop, Spark) to process vast datasets, supporting analytics, reporting, and business intelligence.

3. Machine Learning and AI

EC2 offers GPU-enabled instances (like the P3 family) tailored for training and inference workloads in AI, deep learning, and scientific computing.

4. Development, Testing, and Staging

Developers spin up EC2 instances as ephemeral environments for coding, testing, and staging applications without maintaining physical infrastructure.

5. Batch Processing

EC2’s on-demand compute supports running batch jobs that process large volumes of data or transactions asynchronously.

6. Disaster Recovery and Backup

Businesses use EC2 for secondary data centers or failover environments, enabling quick recovery in case of on-premises system failures.

7. Gaming and Streaming Services

Gaming companies deploy multiplayer game servers on EC2, benefiting from low latency and scalable backend infrastructure.

8. Containerized and Microservices Architectures

EC2 hosts container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes or Amazon ECS/EKS, supporting microservices-based application deployment.

How Amazon EC2 Works Along with Architecture

Amazon EC2 is built upon a highly distributed, secure, and fault-tolerant infrastructure with several key architectural components:

1. Regions and Availability Zones (AZs)

AWS is segmented into Regions (geographic areas) and within each Region multiple Availability Zones (physically separate data centers). This design offers high availability and fault tolerance by allowing customers to deploy instances across AZs to avoid single points of failure.

2. Instances

EC2 instances are virtual servers with configurable CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. Each instance runs on hypervisor technology that abstracts physical hardware. Instance types are categorized by workload type, e.g., compute-optimized, memory-optimized, GPU-powered, etc.

3. Amazon Machine Images (AMIs)

An AMI is a template containing the OS, software, and configuration settings used to launch instances. Users can select from public AMIs or create custom ones tailored to their applications.

4. Elastic Block Store (EBS)

EBS provides persistent block-level storage volumes that can be attached to EC2 instances. Unlike instance store (ephemeral) storage, EBS volumes persist independently and can be snapshot for backup.

5. Networking and Security

Virtual Private Cloud (VPC): Each EC2 instance runs inside a VPC, a logically isolated virtual network.

Subnets: VPCs are divided into subnets for organizing resources.

Security Groups: Stateful firewalls that control inbound and outbound traffic.

Elastic IPs: Static IP addresses that can be mapped to instances.

Network ACLs: Stateless firewall controls for subnets.

6. Elastic Load Balancer (ELB)

ELB distributes incoming traffic across multiple instances to improve availability and scalability.

7. Auto Scaling

Auto Scaling automatically adjusts the number of running instances based on demand and predefined policies.

8. Instance Metadata and IAM Roles

Instances can access metadata and assume IAM roles for securely managing permissions to AWS resources without embedding credentials.

Basic Workflow of Amazon EC2

Step 1: Select AMI

Choose the appropriate Amazon Machine Image that suits the desired OS and software configuration.

Step 2: Select Instance Type

Select an instance type based on compute, memory, storage, and network performance requirements.

Step 3: Configure Instance

Set networking, IAM role, monitoring, user data scripts, and placement within VPC subnets.

Step 4: Add Storage

Attach required EBS volumes and define their size, type, and IOPS.

Step 5: Configure Security

Define security groups to control traffic. Create or select key pairs for secure SSH or RDP access.

Step 6: Launch Instance

Start the instance and wait for it to transition to “running” status.

Step 7: Connect and Deploy

Connect to the instance via SSH (Linux) or RDP (Windows), install software, configure services, and deploy applications.

Step 8: Monitor and Scale

Monitor metrics via CloudWatch, set up alarms, and configure Auto Scaling and Load Balancers to maintain application availability.

Step-by-Step Getting Started Guide for Amazon EC2

Step 1: Create AWS Account

Sign up for an AWS account at https://aws.amazon.com.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure are two of the biggest names in public cloud computing. For example, if an organization is in need of a strong Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider or needs Windows integration, Azure would be the preferable choice while if an enterprise is looking for infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS ) or diverse set of tools then AWS might be the best solution.

Let take a look on various aspect, and then we see who is better?

What is Azure?

Azureis the primary interface for managing apps, services and solutions commissioned on the Azure platform. This feature-rich web application allows you to interact with Azure services through a rich web-based interface, building, managing, and monitoring everything from simple web apps to complex cloud applications in a single, unified console.

Advantages of Azure

Here are some advantages of adopting Azure cloud services:

Capability for developers and users to create, maintain and deploy applications

Fully scalable cloud computing platform offers open access across multiple languages, frameworks, and tools

Total support for Microsoft legacy apps

Support for mixed Linux/Windows environments

Offers inbuilt tool like Azure stack to help the organization deliver Azure service from the own data centre

What is AWS?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a secure cloud services platform, offering compute power, database storage, content delivery and other functionality to help businesses scale and grow. It is a subsidiary of Amazon providing on-demand cloud computing platforms.

Advantages of Azure

Here are some advantages of AWS cloud services:

Compute Cloud allows you to increase or decrease storage according to the need of your organization

AWS enables you to select an operating system, programming language, database of your choice

Robust partner ecosystem

Broad & deep service offerings

High Transfer Stability

Offers more data centers for availability and low latency

Stronger support for Bl and analytics

Better DevOps support

AWS and Azure are both leading cloud computing platforms, and they offer a wide range of services. It can be difficult to decide which one is the best for your needs.

Here is a comparison of the two platforms:

AWS

Pros:

More mature platform with a wider range of services

More scalable and reliable

More cost-effective for some workloads

Cons:

Can be more complex to use

Not as well-integrated with Windows as Azure

Azure

Pros:

More integrated with Windows and Microsoft products

Easier to use for some workloads

More cost-effective for other workloads

Cons:

Not as mature as AWS

Smaller range of services

Some of the key differences are:

Both Azure and AWS supports hybrid cloud but Azure supports hybrid cloud better.

Azure offers express routes while AWS offers direct connection.

Azure provides security by offering permissions on the whole account whereas AWS security is provided using defined roles with permission control feature.

Azure has 140 availability zone whereas AWS has 61 availability zone.

Azure machines are grouped into cloud service and respond to the same domain name with various ports whereas the AWS machine can be accessed separately.

Now, let’s see AWS vs Azure which is better for your needs?

We have tried to shower some light on AWS vs Azure debate in this article. There is no clear winner in this AWS Azure battle of cloud service providers. Comparing Azure and AWS is extremely difficult as both continue to launch new pricing structures, new products, and new integrations. Microsoft Azure has increased its market share in the last couple of years, but not to an extent where there is a real contest between the two companies at least for the near future.

The decision to choose either of the platforms depends on the needs of organizations how AWS vs Azure comparison meets those requirements.

Therefore, the final selection will be depend on the need of your organization. And also if you want to learn AWS or Azure then please check out Devopsschool.com

In this particular blog, we will take a look at the future of AWS Solution Architect Associate and also rising demand for AWS Solution Architect Associate Jobs. Cloud computing become a lot of and a lot of well-known, a lot of and a lot of businesses and organizations area unit getting down to move to the AWS platform. These days numerous businesses and organizations area unit moving their services and apps on AWS platform. AWS includes a hundred seventy five services starting from networking and storage to advanced AI and IoT tools. And that’s simply at the high level. Once you get into the AWS services, there’s a fair deeper level of selection.

To understand that AWS services and merchandise to use is simply as necessary an ability on the way to use them. That’s the role of the AWS Solutions creator.

What is an AWS Solutions Architect?

AWS solutions architect are the ones for set up security, storage, and networking. These skill of a solutions architect to pick the proper AWS services is incredibly valuable, and the best way to validate that skill is with the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification.

Professionals out there who want to become an AWS Solutions Architect certification only need to pass SAA-C02 exam.

The exam is not easy and about of 130-minute, consist of multiple-choice exam, and it costs $150. The AWS Solutions Architect – Associate certification requires both deep AWS product knowledge as well as how all the services interact. That’s very much reflected in the exam objectives:

Design resilient architectures

Design high-performing architectures

Design secure applications and architectures

Design cost-optimized architectures

How difficult is the AWS Solutions Architect?

The AWS Solutions Architect – Associate is an entry-level certification by AWS. This certification is designed to validate the expertise that learn as an architect, which isn’t an entry-level job. The task of a solutions architect is to find a balance between the competing forces of technology and business needs. When designing architectures, solutions architects need to balance security, performance, resilience, and cost as well as customer requirements.

Solutions architects need to know which instance to use and when. Now expand that knowledge base to the entire panoply of AWS services. It’s a lot. Now consider the type of question you may see on the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate exam. AWS certification exams aren’t necessarily known for curveball exam questions, but pay careful attention to the details. That’s what makes this particular test more difficult than others.

Designing secure, resilient, high-performance, cost-effective architectures isn’t easy — and the exam reflects the balancing act. Don’t let this Associate-level certification fool you. It’s a tough exam, but it’s doable.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate Salary

Unsurprisingly, you don’t truly see the duty title “AWS Solutions Architect” on the duty boards too usually (unless you’re observing Amazon jobs). Instead, you’ll usually see job titles like cloud creator, systems creator, or cloud solutions creator. These generic creator positions are usually expert-level roles that need a minimum of a number of years of creator expertise — further as associate degree creator certification. The level of experience is actually mirrored within the wage. The typical wage for a cloud creator in urban center is $118,736. Meanwhile, cloud creator positions in Cleveland, Ohio, solely pay $98,486 p.a. The national average for a cloud creator is around $105,000 p.a. It’s vital to notice that you just will earn the AWS Solutions creator – Associate certification and still be under-qualified for many cloud creator positions.

Bear in mind that Associate-level AWS certifications are still thought of entry-level. To completely notice your earning potential and land employment as a cloud creator, you’ll would like a minimum of 5 or six years of expertise additionally to the certification.

Is the AWS Solutions Architect Worth It?

If you’re working at a company that uses AWS, the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate certification is absolutely worth it. However, it depends on what you want to do with it. For someone with a few years of AWS experience, then the Solutions Architect certification can help validate the skills you need to move into a higher-level engineer or entry-level architect role. Again, the Solutions Architect certification alone won’t get you an architect job, but it’ll position you well enough to make the jump once you have the experience. To earn that title, you’ll need to spend a few years working with stakeholders to develop secure, scalable, resilient AWS architectures. Once you’re there, you can look back and see the cert was definitely worth it.

I hope this particular blog is helpful and informative for you, If you want to know more about AWS and want to learn AWS and become a AWS Certified professionals then I would like to suggest you DevOpsSchool.com, one of the top institute for AWS Certified Architect Associate in top cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore and Globally.

Thank You!!

In this particular blog we will going to discuss about the differences between AWS and Azure, taking a look on various aspect, and then we see for better choice?

Offers inbuilt tool like Azure stack to help the organization deliver Azure service from the own data centre.

Introduction

Guys, today in this blog you will learn in detail about DevOps and AWS DevOps, so let’s know what is DevOps and AWS DevOps. DevOps is a term of the two words ‘development’ and ‘operations’. DevOps is not a technology, it is a combination of cultural, practices, and tools that increases an organization’s ability to deliver applications and services. As we know, AWS DevOps provides application developer teams with the means to efficiently implement continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). This enables them to securely store and version application source code, while automatically building, testing, and eventually deploying the application to either on-premises environments or to AWS.

What is DevOps?

DevOps is a software development methodology where the Development team & Operations teamwork as together. After adopting DevOps, it helps to increase the speed of an organization to deliver applications and services. And it can be defined as the alignment of development and IT operations with better communication and collaboration. And those who are DevOps engineers use many tools for the development & operations processes so that our life becomes easy. These popular DevOps tools are- Docker, Git, SVN, Maven, Jenkins, Selenium, Kubernetes, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack, Nagios, Splunk, etc.

What data is stored in ephemeral storage of an Amazon EC2 instance?

Anything that is not stored on an ebs volume that is mounted to the instance will be lost. For instance, if you mount your ebs volume at /mystuff, then anything not in /mystuff will be lost. If you don’t mount an ebs volume and save stuff on it, then I believe everything will be lost.

You can create an AMI from your current machine state, which will contain everything in your ephemeral storage. Then, when you launch a new instance based on that AMI it will contain everything as it is now.

Meaning of “Warning: Please note that any data on the ephemeral storage of your instance will be lost when it is stopped”

There is a difference between “stop” and “terminate”. If you “stop” an instance that is backed by EBS then the information on the root volume will still be in the same state when you “start” the machine again.

Basically, root volume (your entire virtual system disk) is ephemeral, but only if you choose to create AMI backed by Amazon EC2 instance store.

If you choose to create AMI backed by EBS then your root volume is backed by EBS and everything you have on your root volume will be saved between reboots.

If you are not sure what type of volume you have, look under EC2->Elastic Block Store->Volumes in your AWS console and if your AMI root volume is listed there then you are safe. Also, if you go to EC2->Instances and then look under column “Root Device” of your instance and if it says “ebs”, then you don’t have to worry about data on your root device.

Answer

Terminate Instance

When you terminate an EC2 instance, the instance will be shutdown and the virtual machine that was provisioned for you will be permanently taken away and you will no longer be charged for instance usage. Any data that was stored locally on the instance will be lost. Any attached EBS volumes will be detached and deleted. However, if you attach an EBS Snapshot to an instance at boot time, the default option in the Dashboard is to delete the attached EBS volume upon termination.

Stop Instance

When you stop an EC2 instance, the instance will be shutdown and the virtual machine that was provisioned for you will be permanently taken away and you will no longer be charged for instance usage. The key difference between stopping and terminating an instance is that the attached bootable EBS volume will not be deleted. The data on your EBS volume will remain after stopping while all information on the local (ephemeral) hard drive will be lost as usual. The volume will continue to persist in its availability zone. Standard charges for EBS volumes will apply. Therefore, you should only stop an instance if you plan to start it again within a reasonable timeframe. Otherwise, you might want to terminate an instance instead of stopping it for cost saving purposes.

The ability to stop an instance is only supported on instances that were launched using an EBS-based AMI where the root device data is stored on an attached EBS volume as an EBS boot partition instead of being stored on the local instance itself. As a result, one of the key advantages of starting a stopped instance is that it should theoretically have a faster boot time. When you start a stopped instance the EBS volume is simply attached to the newly provisioned instance. Although, the AWS-id of the new virtual machine will be the same, it will have new IP Addresses, DNS Names, etc. You shouldn’t think of starting a stopped instance as simply restarting the same virtual machine that you just stopped as it will most likely be a completely different virtual machine that will be provisioned to you.

There are several different kinds of sources to boot from in the DreamCompute dashboard, but they all need to create some sort of virtual disk for the virtual machine to boot. The virtual disk can use either ephemeral storage or volume block storage. When launching an instance, you have several Boot Source options:

Image: Launches an instance from the image you choose onto either an ephemeral disk or a new volume disk.

Instance Snapshot: Launches an instance from the instance snapshot you choose onto either an ephemeral disk or a new volume disk.

Volume: Launches an instance from an existing bootable volume.

Volume Snapshot: Creates a volume from the volume snapshot you choose and then launches an instance using that new bootable volume.

Ephemeral boot disks

Ephemeral disks are virtual disks that are created for the sole purpose of booting a virtual machine and should be thought of as temporary.

Ephemeral disks are useful if you aren’t worried about needing to duplicate an instance or destroy an instance and save the data. You can still mount a volume on an instance that is booted from an ephemeral disk and put any data that needs to be saved on it, instead of using the volume as the root of your OS.

Can be snapshotted: Useful for duplicating instances or having a copy of an instance at a certain point in time. Snapshots of ephemeral boot disks are stored as Images and count against DreamCompute’s Image quota.

Do not use up volume quota: If you have more instance quota, you can always boot it from an ephemeral disk even if you don’t have any volume quota left.

Are destroyed when the instance is terminated: This means you will loose your data if you want to delete an instance to free up some instance quota.

Volume Boot Disks

Volumes are a more permanent form of storage than ephemeral disks and can be used to boot from as well as a mountable block device.

Volume boot disks are useful if you need an easy way to duplicate instances and back them up with snapshots, or if you need a more reliable storage solution for your instance than an ephemeral disk. If you use them, you should plan ahead so that you have enough quota for all of the instances you want to boot.

Can be snapshotted: Useful for duplicating instances or having a copy of an instance at a certain point in time.

Does not get destroyed when you delete the instance (Unless you select the “Delete Volume on Instance Delete” option): You can delete the instance and your data will still exist as a volume that you can boot from later.

Uses your volume quota: This can be pricey if you have lots of instances, or take lots of snapshots.

1 GB to store in US-East-1: (Updated at 2016.dec.20)

Glacier: $0.004/Month (Note: Major price cut in 2016)

S3: $0.023/Month

S3-IA (announced in 2015.09): $0.0125/Month (+$0.01/gig retrieval charge)

EBS: $0.045-0.1/Month (depends on speed – SSD or not) + IOPS costs

EFS: $0.3/Month

Further storage options, which may be used for temporary storing data while/before processing it:

SNS

SQS

Kinesis stream

DynamoDB, SimpleDB

The costs above are just samples. There can be differences by region, and it can change at any point. Also there are extra costs for data transfer (out to the internet). However they show a ratio between the prices of the services.

There are a lot more differences between these services:

EFS is:

Generally Available (out of preview), but may not yet be available in your region

Network filesystem (that means it may have bigger latency but it can be shared across several instances; even between regions)

It is expensive compared to EBS (~10x more) but it gives extra features.

It’s a highly available service.

It’s a managed service

You can attach the EFS storage to an EC2 Instance

Can be accessed by multiple EC2 instances simultaneously

Since 2016.dec.20 it’s possible to attach your EFS storage directly to on-premise servers via Direct Connect. ()

EBS is:

A block storage (so you need to format it). This means you are able to choose which type of file system you want.

As it’s a block storage, you can use Raid 1 (or 0 or 10) with multiple block storages

It is really fast

It is relatively cheap

With the new announcements from Amazon, you can store up to 16TB data per storage on SSD-s.

You can snapshot an EBS (while it’s still running) for backup reasons

But it only exists in a particular region. Although you can migrate it to another region, you cannot just access it across regions (only if you share it via the EC2; but that means you have a file server)

You need an EC2 instance to attach it to

New feature (2017.Feb.15): You can now increase volume size, adjust performance, or change the volume type while the volume is in use. You can continue to use your application while the change takes effect.

S3 is:

An object store (not a file system).

You can store files and “folders” but can’t have locks, permissions etc like you would with a traditional file system

This means, by default you can’t just mount S3 and use it as your webserver

But it’s perfect for storing your images and videos for your website

Great for short term archiving (e.g. a few weeks). It’s good for long term archiving too, but Glacier is more cost efficient.

Great for storing logs

You can access the data from every region (extra costs may apply)

Highly Available, Redundant. Basically data loss is not possible (99.999999999% durability, 99.9 uptime SLA)

Much cheaper than EBS.

You can serve the content directly to the internet, you can even have a full (static) website working direct from S3, without an EC2 instance

Glacier is:

Long term archive storage

Extremely cheap to store

Potentially very expensive to retrieve

Takes up to 4 hours to “read back” your data (so only store items you know you won’t need to retrieve for a long time)

There are several interesting aspects in terms of pricing. For example Glacier, S3, EFS allocates the storage for you based on your usage, while at EBS you need to predefine the allocated storage. Which means, you need to over estimate. ( However it’s easy to add more storage to your EBS volumes, it requires some engineering, which means you always “overpay” your EBS storage, which makes it even more expensive.)
