Alright, let’s end the confusion and get your CentOS Stream 8 repos working<\/strong>.
Here’s the deal as of mid-2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udea8 CentOS Stream 8 is EOL (End of Life)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As of June 2024<\/strong>, CentOS Stream 8 has reached end of life<\/strong>.
Official mirrors are being removed or archived<\/strong>, and that’s why you keep getting 404 Not Found<\/code> on all repo URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a configuration bug on your part\u2014the repos themselves are GONE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udfe0 What are your options now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Option 1: Migrate to CentOS Stream 9 or Rocky\/AlmaLinux 8\/9<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Recommended.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Download a Rocky or AlmaLinux minimal ISO, or CentOS Stream 9 cloud image, and migrate or rebuild your instance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Both Rocky and AlmaLinux have active 8.x and 9.x repos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    \n\n\n\n

    Option 2: Use Vault\/Archive Repos (Not Recommended for Production!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    CentOS does maintain an archive of EOL repos:<\/strong>
    You can use the CentOS vault. These repos will never be updated again<\/strong> and may disappear at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to use CentOS Vault Archive for Stream 8:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Replace your AppStream and BaseOS repo files with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

    • No security updates.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • No bugfixes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Only use for recovery, migration, or as a very short-term solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      \ud83d\ude80 Best Practice: Migrate ASAP<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • Start planning to rebuild your server on<\/strong>:\n
          \n
        • CentOS Stream 9<\/strong> (if you want to stay close to RHEL)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Rocky Linux 8\/9<\/strong> (drop-in replacement for CentOS 8\/9)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • AlmaLinux 8\/9<\/strong> (also RHEL-compatible)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Or Oracle Linux 8\/9<\/strong> (free as well)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
          \n\n\n\n
          If you need a Rocky or AlmaLinux repo file, or a migration script, let me know!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
          Try the Vault repo above and you\u2019ll get your yum\/dnf<\/code> working again for now.<\/strong>
          If you want a one-liner to convert your server to Rocky or Alma, I can give that as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
          You have two issues<\/strong> now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Repo listed more than once:<\/strong>
            You have duplicate [baseos]<\/code> and [appstream]<\/code> definitions in multiple .repo<\/code> files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Still using wrong (404) URL:<\/strong>
            You are still trying to reach mirror.stream.centos.org\/CentOS-Stream-8\/AppStream\/x86_64\/os\/<\/code>, which is not available<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
            \n\n\n\n
            Let’s Fix Both Issues in 3 Steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
            \n\n\n\n
            \ud83d\uded1 Step 1: Remove\/Disable All Old or Wrong CentOS 8 Stream Repo Files<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
            First, move all default CentOS Stream repo files out of \/etc\/yum.repos.d<\/code><\/strong> to keep only your Vault repo:<\/p>\n\n\n
            \ncd \/etc\/yum.repos.d\nsudo mkdir backup-old-repos\nsudo mv CentOS-Stream-* backup-old-repos\/\n\n<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n
            Now your only active repo should be your custom\/vault one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
