Passwords can be stolen through phishing, malware and data breaches. Bots can test credentials exposed by completely unrelated companies, while stolen sessions may allow an attacker to bypass parts of the traditional login process altogether.

That’s why ATO protection software has become an important part of account security. Rather than relying on a successful password check, these tools can look at signals such as bot activity, device information, user behaviour, compromised credentials and what happens after somebody logs in.

The best approach depends heavily on the problem a business is trying to solve. Some tools specialise in detecting automated attacks. Others analyse behaviour, identify exposed credentials or strengthen authentication.

Here are 10 account takeover protection tools worth considering.

1. DataDome

DataDome takes a real-time approach to account takeover, combining bot detection with behavioural and contextual signals across the customer session.

Its Account Protect product can assess activity around login, registration, password changes and account updates. That matters because an attacker doesn’t necessarily become harmless once they’ve successfully logged in.

A sudden change to payment information or account details may provide another opportunity to identify suspicious behaviour.

DataDome is particularly relevant for businesses dealing with credential stuffing and other automated attacks but wanting protection to continue beyond the initial login.

2. Arkose Labs

Arkose Labs approaches the problem partly through attack economics.

Credential stuffing works because bots make it cheap to test large quantities of stolen credentials. Arkose can introduce adaptive challenges when activity appears risky, making repeated attempts more difficult and expensive.

The idea isn’t simply to identify a bot and block it. It’s to increase the effort required until continuing the attack becomes less attractive.

Its wider platform also covers areas including fake account creation, session hijacking and brute-force attacks.

3. HUMAN Security

HUMAN Security focuses heavily on the automated side of account takeover.

Its technology can identify credential-stuffing and brute-force activity around authentication, but its ATO offering also extends into compromised credentials and post-login account activity.

That broader view is useful because successful authentication isn’t always the end of an attack. Once inside, fraudsters may change account information, drain stored value or carry out other actions that look legitimate because they’re happening inside a trusted account.

4. Cloudflare

For businesses already using Cloudflare infrastructure, its account takeover capabilities may be particularly interesting.

Cloudflare Bot Management can identify suspicious volumes of login attempts and failures, while rate limiting and custom security rules can be used to respond. Its leaked credential checks add another useful signal where passwords exposed elsewhere are being used against a website.

The attraction here is integration.

Rather than introducing an entirely separate ATO platform, businesses may be able to extend security technology that’s already sitting in front of their applications.

5. Sift

Sift looks at the person behind the login rather than concentrating solely on whether the traffic is automated.

Its Account Defense technology assesses signals including device, location, behaviour and network information to identify suspicious login activity.

That’s useful when an attacker isn’t a bot.

Someone sitting behind a laptop with the correct stolen credentials can look perfectly human because they are human. Behavioral and contextual signals become much more important in those situations.

Sift can also continue monitoring activity after login and introduce additional authentication when risk increases.

6. Forter

Forter is particularly relevant to retailers and other commerce businesses.

Its Account Protection technology is designed to tackle both account takeover and fake account creation, with additional attention paid to high-risk actions inside customer accounts.

Think about what a retail account can contain: stored payment details, loyalty rewards, order histories and saved addresses.

For an attacker, getting through the login may simply be the first step. Monitoring what happens afterwards can help businesses identify when a trusted account starts behaving differently.

7. SEON

SEON combines device intelligence, behavioural signals and velocity checks to identify suspicious activity around accounts.

It can examine login behaviour alongside information about the device and session, helping businesses decide whether additional verification is needed.

That’s an important distinction.

A login from a new device isn’t automatically fraudulent. Neither is an unusual location. But several unexpected signals appearing together can tell a different story.

SEON can use that increased risk to trigger additional verification rather than treating every customer as suspicious.

8. SpyCloud

SpyCloud tackles ATO from a noticeably different direction.

Instead of waiting for stolen information to appear at the login page, it focuses on discovering exposed identity data earlier.

That can include compromised passwords, session cookies and other information obtained through malware, phishing and breaches.

If a business knows that authentication information has been compromised, it has an opportunity to act before an attacker successfully uses it.

That could mean forcing a password reset, invalidating a session or requesting additional authentication.

Sometimes the best way to stop an account takeover is to know somebody has copied the key before they reach the door.

9. Okta Customer Identity

Okta approaches ATO primarily through identity and authentication.

Its customer identity technology includes multi-factor authentication, passwordless authentication and protection against compromised credentials. Identity threat capabilities can also help businesses monitor active sessions for suspicious contextual changes after authentication.

This makes Okta particularly relevant where a business wants account takeover protection to sit within a wider customer identity strategy.

Removing or reducing reliance on passwords can also tackle one of the underlying weaknesses attackers repeatedly exploit: credentials that can be stolen, guessed or reused.

10. Ping Identity

Ping Identity combines identity management with fraud detection through technology including PingOne Protect.

It uses device, network, location and behavioural information to calculate risk around user activity. Depending on that risk, businesses can introduce additional friction such as verification or authentication.

Its capabilities also cover threats including credential stuffing, suspicious devices and session hijacking.

Again, the interesting part is context.

A low-risk customer doesn’t necessarily need to prove who they are repeatedly simply because stronger security technology exists.

Which ATO Protection Tool Is Right for Your Business?

The answer probably isn’t the product with the longest feature list.

Start with how accounts are actually being attacked.

If bots are hammering the login page with stolen passwords, bot detection and credential-stuffing protection may be the priority. If criminals are successfully logging in and committing fraud afterwards, behavioural and post-login monitoring becomes much more important.

If exposed credentials are the problem, earlier intelligence could allow the business to intervene before the login happens at all.

The existing technology stack matters too. A business already using Cloudflare, for example, may approach the decision differently from one looking for a dedicated fraud or identity platform.

And then there’s the customer.

It would be relatively easy to reduce account takeover by making every login painfully difficult. Constant challenges, verification requests and security checks would undoubtedly stop some attackers.

They’d frustrate plenty of genuine customers as well.

Good account takeover protection has to manage both sides of that equation.

Make suspicious behaviour harder. Introduce additional checks when the evidence justifies them. Continue watching after authentication rather than assuming a successful login means everything is safe.

But when a genuine customer arrives and behaves exactly as expected, let them get on with what they came to do.

Someone enters the correct email address and password.
